Round table “Best practices of decentralization: the experience of EU countries for Ukraine.”

On May 27, 2022, Sumy State University hosted a round table, “Best Practices of Decentralization: The EU Country Experience for Ukraine.” The event was organized within the framework of the educational project ERASMUS-JMO-2021-HEI-TCH-RSCH -101047645 – “EULOCDEM: Local Democracy: Best European Practices for Ukraine” under the Erasmus + program Jean Monnet.

The round table aimed to get acquainted with the EU country on decentralization and its awareness in Ukraine.

The speakers of the event were:

Elena Nassen, a representative of the Bilzen community in Limburg (Belgium), spoke about the peculiarities of the organization of local self-government in Belgium on the example of the community in which she lives. Identified the tools of local democracy and mechanisms for their application. She also touched upon the issues of assistance to Ukrainians who left Ukraine for Belgium.

Andriy Stasiv, Deputy Mayor of Stryi, Lviv Region, who shared his experience of decentralization on the example of the Stryi Territorial Community, spoke about the innovations that have been introduced in the process of unification and integration of communities into the Stryi TС. He identified the challenges facing the community today due to the war.

 

Anton Avksentiev, an expert of the NGO “Analytical Center” Observatory for Democracy, “Candidate of Political Science, identified the challenges facing Ukraine in decentralization during the war.

 

The participants’ reports were relevant and informative and involved the audience in the discussion of the round table and lively debate. Based on the results of the round table, a collection of abstracts of participants’ reports will be published.
