Round table “Local democracy: the role of communities and local self-government bodies.”

On May 10, 2024, a round table, “Local democracy: the role of communities and local self-government bodies,” was held at Sumy State University. The event was organized as part of the implementation of the educational project ERASMUS-JMO-2021-HEI-TCH-RSCH -101047645 – “EULOCDEM: Local democracy: best European practices for Ukraine” of the Erasmus+ program, directed by the Jean Monnet Module.

The purpose of the round table was to familiarize with the experience of the EU countries regarding the use of the tools of local democracy and its implementation in Ukraine.

Speakers of the event were:

Anton AVKSENTYEV, expert of the NGO “Democracy Observatory,” senior lecturer of the Department of Political Science of Kharkiv National University named after V. N. Karazin, Candidate of Political Sciences with the report “Economic Frontier: financial capacity of communities of Kharkiv region and Sumy region.”

Nataliya Vasylenko, a member of the NGO “Ukrainian Environmental Club “Green Wave,” public advisor of the NGO “Association of Public Advisors of Ukraine,” and head of the quarter committee of Irpin, shared her practical experience of using public participation tools, namely the creation of the “Square under the linden trees.”

Andrii Lebid, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor of the Department of Psychology, Political Science and Socio-Cultural Technologies of Sumy State University, member of the Board of the Public Council at the Sumy Regional State Administration with the report “Effective tools of participation at the local level.”

The project team expresses great gratitude to the speakers for their informative and exciting reports to all participants for their interest in the event topic and for support for the project as a whole.

Based on the results of the round table, a collection of theses of the participants’ reports will be published.
